Classes

Youth Judo

Our youth judo class is lead by sensei Matthew Gilmartin and other members of the Denver Judo coaching staff.  This class is open to kids ages 5 and older. Students begin with basic safety techniques (falling methods) and progress to throwing and grappling techniques.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in local and national events and to test for advancing belt ranks.  This unique class focuses on the competitive aspects of judo while instilling the core value of judo - Jita Kyoei or mutual benefit and welfare - as well as self-confidence, respect, and discipline.

Classes are on-going but new students are encouraged to start the first Tuesday of the month.

Adult Judo Fundamentals

Led by senseis Alyssa Gilkey Zawack and Kedge Zawack, this class is recommended for new participants.  The fundamentals class will introduce the basic techniques of judo, beginning with falling and progressing to throwing and grappling.  Our comprehensive syllabus ensures that new students are introduced to the full gokyo of Kodokan judo.  Once basic skills are attained, students will be encouraged to participate in local and national tournaments, and to test for advancing belt ranks and to participate in the competitive classes.

Fundamentals classes are open to students ages 13 and older of all experience levels.

Competitive Judo

Led by 3-time Paralympic Medalist Scott Moore and 2-time Pan American and World Team member Heidi Moore, this class focuses on the techniques and strategies of competition judo with the intention of preparing athletes for local, national, and international events.  Members of the Denver Judo coaching staff will assist to ensure that all athletes are being able to attain their judo potential.  

Classes will cover gripping strategies, competitive variations of techniques, and mental preparedness as well as providing a high-intensity workout.  

You do not have to attend the fundamentals class prior to participating in the competition class. New students will be paired with black belt instructors to work on falling techniques and fundamentals.

All Level Adult Judo

Open to students ages 13 and older of all experience levels, our mixed level classes will provide students the opportunity to learn the technical aspects of judo including the rules of sport as well as traditional and competitive techniques.  Led by certified USA Judo coaches, these classes are meant to complement the fundamental and competitive classes.

Judo Kata

Judo kata are pre-arranged, formal sequences of movements used for training in judo. They are a way to systematically learn, practice, and perfect judo principles and techniques and provide a structured and repeatable way to develop technique, timing, and understanding of judo philosophy.

Headed by national kata competitors, this class is open to all ages.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Led by Professor Jason Mims, black belt under
Denver Judo's BJJ classes focus largely on techniques which can cross-over between the arts and is included with your monthly fees.

Sumo

Denver Judo is home to Shiroyama Sumo.  
Shiroyama Sumo is lead by sumotori and former international competitor Wes Bjornsson.  Classes are open to athletes of all ages and sizes and are free of charge.

6:00pm - 7:30pm
