Jessica began judo in 1975 in Northern California with Sensei Henry Page. Jessica joined the Navy in 1980 and took a hiatus from judo until 1984 when she was stationed in Denver.  In Denver, Jessica was a member of the American Judo College under Sensei Frank Goody where she attained advanced ranks in several other martial arts.  

In 1999 Jessica returned to full time training in judo under Senseis Grace Jividen and Kari Gabrielle.  Jessica joined Denver Judo in 2002.  She and her husband James Carmer decided that they wanted to own a dojo, so they purchased a building which has been the home of Denver Judo since 2005.  

Since 2010 Jessica and Jim have traveled, coached, and trained in many places including Soko Joshi in San Francisco and the US Coast Guard Base in Alameda.  They own a sailboat named Hajime and spend part of every year sailing around the Baja area and assisting at Irimi Dojo in Mazatlán, Mexico. 

Jessica is a former Veteran's world champion and multiple time medalist.  She competes regularly in Veterans events around the country.  She is a former USA Judo elite athlete, and avid kata competitor placing 2nd in the USA Judo Ju No Kata division with her husband in 2025. 

Along with Jim, Jessica steps in regularly to assist with practices. 

Jessica holds the rank of yodan in judo and is a certified referee and coach under USA Judo.
