Matthew began judo in 1984 in Colorado Springs before continuing his training with Team Sacramento in northern California. He joined Denver Judo in 1995 as a graduate student when it was then located on the campus of the University of Denver. He took a lengthy hiatus in 2004 to raise his two children, returning to judo in 2020. He is a certified regional coach and certified regional referee. He lives in Littleton with his wife of 30 years and enjoys visiting with his now grown children
